Alabama Shakes – Sound and Colour

Sound and Colour is the second album by Alabama Shakes and if you were a fan of the first then I guarantee you will be a fan of this one. Twelve tracks of funky blues rock with searing vocals from front woman Brittany Howard who can change from soulful whispers to roaring blues within the same song and back again. The chug chug guitar and bass on ‘Don’t Wanna Fight’, the soft intro groove of title track ‘Sound and Colour’ and the instant classic ‘Shoegaze’ are all fine examples of a band comfortable in their style. They can play it slow and cool or proper full on and I imagine that if the energy of the record is anything to go by their live shows must be killer. A modern slant on a traditional vibe there isn’t a bad song on here and they just get better with every listen. Rock, blues, folk, funk, motown and soul all mix together to create a sound that is familiar and yet somehow unique.
