Matthew E White – Fresh Blood

If you liked Matthew E White’s first album chances are you will love his second, ‘Fresh Blood’ takes the template of ‘Big Inner’ and drips it with soul, jazz, gospel and rock and this time around he is not afraid to pop in the odd rousing chorus. ‘Rock & Roll is cold’ could be contender for track of the year with its rambling piano line and funky feel but elsewhere there is the brilliant sing-along of ‘Feeling Good Is Good Enough’ and the slow burner ‘Holy Moly’. Every track is laced with strings, horns and choirs of voices that evoke a feel good summer vibe. There’s also poignant moments like ‘Tranquility’ about the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman and ‘Circle ‘Round The Sun’ about the suicide of a friend’s mother but it’s never maudlin and despite the subject matter White still manages to instil each track with a heart and soul that shines through. If you like your indie rock tinged with sweet soul and seventies funk then ‘Fresh Blood’ should be at the top of your musical shopping list.
