Thee Silver Mt Zion – Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything

On this their 7th album SMZ are continuing to hone their unique sound and although the band have stripped down the music hasn’t. Epic orchestral/band hybrid compositions mix electric guitar, bass and drums with sweeping strings, organs and feedback. Thierry Amar’s distinctive voice is played off Sophie and Jessica’s brilliantly like beauties and the beast. Vocals are featured much more in these six tracks than previously with some of the bands darkest lyrics to date. ‘The world itself consumed, Man, that’s the only truth, And what we loved was not enough, Even though we wanted to’ begins the impressive eleven minute ‘What We Loved Was Not Enough’ before its central refrain of ‘All our children gonna die’ it would be un-easy listening if the music wasn’t so compelling. Luckily some quirky samples have been added to balance out the rallying calls and doom mongering. It has the power to flit between stroking my ears before audibly assaulting my senses and back again taking the Pixies blueprint of loud quiet loud to magnificent new heights. Existing  fans of SMZ and Godspeed should by now know what to expect, a dark dense affair littered with pockets of beauty and a record that despite the fact I’ve heard it 5 or 6 times is still capable of surprising me with every listen.
