American Hustle

After a string of great movies I was really looking forward to David O. Russell’s ‘American Hustle’ but sadly it left me a little underwhelmed. It looks great and has quite the impressive cast but the story is rather flimsy and it is way too sensitive to pull of being a gritty con film in the vein of a Scorsese or Stone. Bale is tolerable and looks like he’s having the most fun he’s had ages and Lawrence steals the show but Renner is under used and frankly I found Adams and Cooper just annoying. There are some nice stylistic touches but they are all too brief as is the use of good music and at just under three hours it could have easily been trimmed. O. Russell has a certain style of directing that worked well for ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ but doesn’t quite fit here with this film wanting so badly to be ‘Casino’ but falling flat. It almost feels as though there’s a good film in here somewhere but sadly I just couldn’t find it.
