Pond – Hobo Rocket

The underground success of ‘BEARD WIVES DENIM’ pushed these Aussie rockers on to more people’s radars and even gained them some placing’s in the end of last year lists. ‘Hobo Rocket’ is their short but sweet follow up, a psychedelic prog-rock beast that swings wildly around its influences like a fractal and manages to weave them into something great without ever becoming a mess. The kind of sounds you can expect to hear from the album range from early Pink Floyd to T-Rex and touching on Black Sabbath, The Band, The Flaming Lips even Boards of Canada across its seven sprawling tracks. Bass lines throb, drums pound and slabs of guitar duel it out with organs and all manner of swirling sounds and effects creating hallucinogenic soundscapes. The band themselves have hinted at this not being an album proper as that is apparently in the pipeline and there is also talk of a collaboration with MGMT and an upcoming tour but for now just revel in the crazy world of Pond because it’s a musical trip.
