Safety Not Guaranteed

‘Wanted: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. Safety not guaranteed’ is the classified advert that gives this great little indie flick its title. This ad intrigues journalist Jeff and along with two interns, Darius and Arnau, they decide to check it out hoping to get a story for the magazine where Jeff works. So the hapless three embark on a road trip of sorts fully expecting to find the person behind it as crazy as the concept and actually end up on a journey of self-discovery. Funny and original the film mixes a little sci-fi into a strange love story and comes out as an intriguing comedy drama. As quirky as a Wes Anderson with great central performances from Aubrey Plaza as Darius and Mark Duplass as the possible time traveller Kenneth we get to be flies on the wall as their relationship grows. Whether you believe in Kenneth claims or not you can’t help but be swept along on his madcap adventure and the story keeps you guessing until the very end. If you like films like ‘Jeff Who Lives at Home’, ‘Cherry’ or ‘Win Win’ then the chances are you will find something to like here. Well-acted, directed and with a sharp script ‘Safety Not Guaranteed’ was a surprise his at Sundance and it’s easy to see why.
