Ryan Adams – Ashes & Fire

Clean and sober, happily married to Mandy Moore and a Laura Marling fan, alt country’s boy wonder has finally grown up and on new record ‘Ashes & Fire’ it shows. What you will get here across these 11 tracks is the closet work to his 2000 record ‘Heartbreaker’, but gone is the cigarette helped growl of his earlier work replaced by a strange cleaner, crisper falsetto, at times so much so that when Norah Jones joins in a several tracks I didn’t really notice. All the songs here are good, some even stand out like opener ‘Dirty Rain’ but at no point does it ever elevate itself above simple MOR and sadly what made Adams stand out in the first place seems to have been lost. It’s solid and traditional and has great musicianship but sadly it’s lacking the spark it would need to be amazing.
