They Might Be Giants- Join Us

Still going strong thirty years into their career, ‘Join Us’ sounds like a band having fun (take note R.E.M.). Having been a fan from before ‘Birdhouse’ and long after it’s nice to have them back doing what they do best, eighteen short but sweet songs all as catchy as hell. Although one of my favourite records, ‘John Henry’ was quite mature, even serious and I think a stint making their child friendly records (abc’s, 123’s and science) helped them realise they can produce music that is as fun to make as it is to listen to. Songs like ‘Canajoharie’ and ‘Let you hair hang down’ are typical giants’ tracks (they very rarely stray far from themselves but hey if it isn’t broken) and elsewhere the tunes are what you would expect including the standout ‘When Will You Die’ which is laced with sardonic wit. Multi-instrumental and familiar harmonies abound this record is a welcome addition to their 14 album back catalogue.
