X-Men:First Class

So we reach the dreaded reboot of the X-Men series going back to the origins of Charles Xavier (McAvoy) and Erik Lenhsheer (Fassbender) a.k.a Professor X and Magneto. Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) takes the directors seat and does a pretty good job, with the Cuban missile crisis as its backdrop there are some interesting ideas and set pieces. The chemistry between McAvoy and Fassbender works well and its in these two performances that the film shines (although Fassbender’s Irish drawl creeps out when he is emoting, so any talk of him being the next Bond needs to be put on hold until he can sort that, the quintessential British spy with an Irish accent I think not!). The supporting cast is pretty good apart from some of the choices of characters (Banshee? Riptide? Really, does anyone care?). January Jones and Jason Flemyng have fun as baddies Emma Frost and Azazel respectively but it’s Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw who has the most fun hamming up his role. With a solid script and good effects I can’t help wondering why this film didn’t stay with me more than it did and I think there in lies the problem, it’s an o.k. film just sadly nothing special.
