The Joy Formidable-The Big Roar

On this, their first major label debut, some of the songs will be familiar if you own previous outing ‘Balloon Called Moaning’ but they have been spruced up with a confidence that can only come from a band that have put in the hard work. I first saw them live years ago and have since seen them go from strength to strength which shows on this record. From the epic 7 minute opener ‘The Everchanging Spectrum of a Lie’ to the catchy Kopparberg advert closer ‘The Greatest Light is the Greatest Shade’ the trio make some great noise. Ritzy has a powerful voice for such a little front woman and backed up by the blokes the sound exists in the same camp shared by bands such as the Pixies, Throwing Muses, MBV and the Breeders which is no bad thing. An assured record from a band that should just get bigger and better as they mature.
