The Last Shadow Puppets-The Age of the Understatement

Unless you live under a rock you will have probably heard of this band seeing as it is a side project of Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) and Miles Kane (The Rascals), but will you like it? Die hard Monkey fans might not get their heads around the luscious string arrangements and lack of guitars but at least there is still the wit and fever in the lyrics. Yes it owes a nod to Scott Walker but also to Ennio Morricone and spy thrillers themes, as seen in the video to lead single ‘The Age of the Understatement’ as the two troubadours in done right up jackets walk around in snowy Russia and ride on tanks. But as well as tracks that fly along a barrage of drums there are also ballads that show a softer side to the record and showcase just how well these boys voices compliment each other. It certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste but give it a chance and you might just fall in love with its orchestral beauty and rumbling laments. The backlash has already started and its seems fashionable to not like Turner at the moment, but this jealousy only goes to proves that, at still such a young age, there is bags of talent in him that given the right catalyst like Kane can come out in droves. The question is where next for the boy wonder?
