MGMT-Oracular Spectacular

‘Ohh girl shock my like an electric eel’ sings the lead on opening track ‘Electric Feel’ and straight away you get the sense that MGMT have watched boogie nights one too many times, part disco, scissor sisters funk and nu-rave it’s a hard one to describe and its pretty much the same for the rest of the album. Having seen them live I have to say that the record sounds a lot wimpier and would have been better beefed up with some of that live fuzz. Having said that it isn’t a bad record by any stretch its just different and there’s nothing wrong with that, it has a pinch of eighties, elements of prog Floyd, seventies disco D.A.N.C.E. and more up to date the ghost of Wilco (The Handshake) and The Flaming Lips. Parts of the album fit nicely into the current climate of bands like The Klaxxons and should win them fans that way but I think they are going to be the marmite of the music scene and you are either going to love or loathe them. Lead single and clearly the best track on the album ‘Time to Pretend’ is a good litmus test if that’s not your cup of tea then I’d give the album a wide berth but if your intrigued then submerse yourself in the weird and wonderful world of the Oracular Spectacular a record that dares to be different.
