On first listen to this album I just thought how weird is this record? A mix bag of styles not unlike Nellie McKay’s ‘Get away from me’ from a few years ago. Random time changes, hundreds of instruments (there is even some kazoo) and bizarre lyrics all make this a strange listen at first, but persevere with it because it is this mixture that ultimately gives this album its depth and warmth. A few of the lyrics may shock a few at first but eventually they tone themselves down and become further intrinsic to each composition. This is a record that can really get under your skin if you are prepared to let it. With each track standing alone from the others, but also working as a coherent whole, Lupen Crook has made a really challenging but rewarding album.
